Buzzing bees, droning on in their working, sing songy voices are a hypnotic sound. Try walking through certain flower strewn fields for more than 5 minutes and you will find your mind drifting away like balloon on a windy day.
The sky will seem blue-er, the grass greener and that hum, that low vibrating hum will work it's way into your brain so that you find your steps slowing, your eyelids drooping as you whistle along to that not so tuneless tune.
I suspect, that in some places, the bees have formed alliances with the dragons, and this is why I get sleepy when I walk through those fields...
If it hadn't been for a rock, one nasty, un-moving rock just waiting for my toe, I'd have walked all the way across that field, sun burning on my back, lost in a bee induced trance, and not have ever realized that more more than bees and grass were lurking amongst the blossoms there...
"OW!"
My foot and the rock met, pain swept through my foggy brain better than any caffeine boost. The light seemed to sharpen all around me, I glanced down at the offending rock, past it, to the tiny white flowers that scented the air with delicious perfume.
I inhaled the heavy fragrance, not cloying at all but rich and thick, swirling about my head, teasing my nose. I was surprised to find myself in the middle of the field already, no memory of having walked that far.
I was more surprised by the flash of purple that whizzed by my eyes, angling down towards the very flowers I'd been admiring...and sniffing.
I was downright shocked when the flash of purple that I'd assumed was a hummingbird let out a loud squeal of delight, shouting "Oh my!"
Last time I'd checked hummingbirds didn't shout "oh my".
I stilled, held my breath and allowed my eyes to focus in on the small purple creature now tucked amongst the posies.
The plants were thick there, I wanted to kneel on the soft ground and peer beyond those leaves but I feared startling the little guy whose voice I could still hear.
"Oh yes, yes, yesssss. These are lovely." His singsongy words were followed by what was surely the flutter of wings and a deep inhalation. "Lovvvvvvely!"
I cautiously began lowering myself to the ground, slowly, carefully, not daring to make a sound, cursing my creaky knees, the drone of bees now background music that could not lull my senses whilst my heart pounded with excitement.
Finally I felt the springy grass under my reaching hands, under my knees, I settled down and because my eyes were trained on the mumbling shiny purple...whatever it was...moving behind the plants, I saw the exact moment it saw me.
A head popped over the white blossoms and stared at me, curiously, surprise surely written on it's face as I knew it was on mine. Surprise being the only thing we had in common.
Brilliant red eyes seem to wink and flash in the sunlight, fixated on my own, purple nostrils quivered, a long snout with iridescent scales turned ever so slightly and most breath taking of all, a magnificent set of wings stretched and lifted from the creature's back.
Creature? Ha, I knew what it was though my brain argued the possibility.
I spoke, breathing out on flower scented air, whispering, "Dragon."
The dragon, it had to be one, raised higher, supporting itself on a long sinuous tail that I could see now as he edged around the plants, peered up at me.
"Can't you hear the bees?" He demanded. Not angry but sounding as surprised as myself.
"Um, bees? Yes, well, yes but...." I stammered, nothing intelligent passing my lips that now curved in the beginnings of a smile.
A dragon was questioning me about bees....a DRAGON!
"I paid them good pollen from Montdrákōn to keep trespassers in this here field from noticing me." He said, a little huffy, wiggling his front paws as if he'd like to get his dragon claws on one of those bees...
"Oh, well, if you mean that odd zone-y hum that I swear almost hypnotized me, it's not their fault...it's that rock's over there. I stubbed my toe, woke up, sort of...and......" I trailed off on a breathless whisper, inhaling deeply to calm my skittering pulse, sweet flowers tickled my nose.
"Yes, yes. I see, I see." The dragon looked thoughtful for a moment, fiery eyes un-focused as he mulled my words over.
"Well?" I finally asked, wondering what it was I actually was asking.
The dragon turned, sunlight catching on his scales, eyes winking with good humor. "Well, you're here now, we've met. You're not going to run off and reveal my existence to the world are you?" He sounded more amused than annoyed.
"Umm, well...I mean....I might. You're pretty cool." I admitted sheepishly, I could feel the heat of an embarassed blush stealing over my cheeks.
The dragon laughed, spinning about on is tail, extra lift into the air from those marvelous wings. "Oh well then, at least your honest." He smiled then, a charming smile that hinted at secrets I couldn't even begin to fathom.
"My name is Melanthios, and I am pleased to meet you amongst these brilliant sweet smelling blooms." He grinned, laughter tinging his words, "Despite the failure of the bees' hypnotic hum. Perhaps they need a new song...."
Melanthios trailed off, deep in thought once more and I just sat, staring and watching with wide eyed wonder at the brilliant purple dragon before me, pondering the fate of bees, amidst the sweet smelling flowers scattered across a pretty little field.
I was glad I'd walked this path today, glad for the stone that got in my way and knocked me from the dream like state the bees had produced. So very glad to make the aquaintence of Melanthios, who even as I watched spun on his tail and jammed his long snout into the nearest blossom, inhaling deeply enough that the petals fluttered.
The bees still droned in the background, low resonant music, but I was immune now, wide awake, keeping the company of a flower sniffing dragon.
