Though he could take to the air as easily as any bird, Wapasha spent as much time wandering the earth as he did amongst the blue skies and clouds over head.
Whole days could pass by and Wapasha would realize he'd spent their entirety amongst the trees and plants. Completely enchanted by feathery blades of emerald grass, mesmerised by their intoxicating, achingly green scent. Perfectly content to slide amongst the foilage, a brilliant red dragon with curious eyes, absorbing the beauty of every plant, leaf and flower that caught his fancy.
Wapasha had long since realized that there were a LOT of plants that caught his fancy. Much to his family's amusement, his time on the earth, instead of above it, grew longer all the time. The cool grey shadows of his dragon family would flit across the fields where Wapasha lingered. Always quick to call hello, head tipped back, eyes flashing with joy, he'd wave his wings in the frindly greeting of his kind and watch them soar away.
Meanwhile he was content to stay on the earth, warm sunshine on his back, fertile ground under his tail and an entire garden of beauty within arms reach, all four arms. Often times Wapasha gathered a bouqet of sweet grass close to his golden nose, the better to breath it's rich scent, cradling the living plants gently, while his other arms brushed against the blades, letting them tickle his scaley skin. He'd tasted them too, wondering if anything so green could possibly taste bad.
On the first tasting day he'd sat low to the ground, letting the tall grasses tower over him while he nibbled away on a single leafy spear, savoring the new flavor. His tongue was used to sweet berries gathered from the mountain side where they grew plentiful enough to feed his entire dragon family, the taste of grass had been a surprise. Not unpleasant at all, just different, and it was a flavor he grew to enjoy. Especially when paired wih those dark purple berries his dragon kind favored. There was something about the way the two flavors combined on his tongue into something new and exciting. The berries tasted brighter, the bitter green grass tasted greener, and his taste buds sizzled and sparkled each time he had them together.
Wapasha lay back in the lush grasses, wings folded behind him and stared up at the blue sky, the puffy clouds that drifted by, a bit of grass between his lips, remembering. He thought the taste of green and berries together was a lot like the sky and earth. His long, thick tail idly swept across the ground, a group of butterflies, bright and vibrant under the hot sun flitted away, wary of the idle strength of that tail. Wapasha followed them with his gaze, watched them still thinking. In fact, the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. Each thing was a lovely experience on it's own, but together, both was so much....more.
The sky above reflected brightly in Wapasha's sparkling eyes, it seemed to call to him, invite him to leave the earth and soar through that seemingly endless blue, beckoning him up. He smiled, nostrils flaring, already his body was tensing, readying to launch himself from the grassy field and into the air, wings lifting, spreading, catching the breeze until he was gliding, soundlessly over the very earth and world of plants he so dearly loved.
Part of the sky, part of the earth, there really was no choice, like the grass and the berries....he'd have both....
