There were days Maroo was sure she spent as much time in the air as she did on the sun soaked earth. Leaping across the desert like terrain, dark eyes lightened with the pure pleasure of speed. The ground blurring beneath her long feet, grasses tickling her toes as she swept through.
It was a repetitive, rhythmic way to move, feet bracing, pushing, biting into the dirt, air kissing her soles only to land and push off again...and again....
The sun warmed her back, her ears twitched, listening to the rush of wind as it caught on the shrubbery, rustling music to her ears.
The taste of sweet, delicate grass still lingered on her tongue since Maroo had stopped by a shimmering watering hole. Quenching her thirst, enjoying a mid day's meal. The surface of the pool had buzzed with insects, flitting, shining like golden specks in the air as the sun caught their wings. For a moment, she'd stood still, watching the dancing tangle of insects as it roiled and moved over the water. Enjoying the beauty of the swarm before finally bounding away, once more the wind in her face. Happiest when she was moving, a golden blur herself.
She was on the hunt. Exploring new terrain as always, but her eyes were looking for a dream. A mate, a handsome roo to chase across the open fields. To share shimmering clouds of insect beauty with, to lure into deep grasses only to bound away again on a teasing laugh and flick of tail.
Her friends had laughed, teasing Maroo. Chiding her with gentle reminders she wouldn't catch a handsome buck's eye if she never stood still long enough to be seen. Ha! She wasn't after catching just any boomer's eye. Her soul called for freedom, for racing and fun. She wasn't going to catch a buck's eye but instead catch a buck.
When she saw the one, her mate, she'd know it. By the kiss of wind as he raced by, from the blur of strong feet and long tail trailing behind.
Maroo's heart leapt.
A small smile played on her lips. Her nose quivered as excitement sent shivers through her limbs. Her feet smacked the earth extra hard, plumes of dust rose but she was already gone. Stomach fluttering with anticipation, flying through the air for an eternity.
